from staff reports
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Manager Bryan Shuler Wednesday announced the appointment of Captain Jon Canada as the Interim Chief of the Gainesville Fire Department
"I am pleased to appoint Captain Canada to this position," Shuler said. "It
is a very important period for the Fire Department. In December, ISO representatives will be in our City examining the operations of the Fire Department and assessing the capabilities of our City to address fire safety needs. I am confident in Captain Canada's ability to lead us during this process."
Captain Canada said he is honored and excited about this opportunity.
"It has been a long term goal of mine to serve as Fire Chief. I am looking forward to being a part of the legacy of the Gainesville Fire Department as well as a part of its future."
Canada has been with the department for more than 14 years, rising through the ranks to Captain. He currently serves as Interim Battalion Chief for Shift B.
He will fill the vacancy left by the retirment of Chief Dick Taylor. Taylor announced plans a couple of weeks ago to retire at the end of October.
Captain Canada attended Dekalb College and is currently pursuing a Fire Science Degree at Lanier Tech. He is a Georgia Registered EMT and has assisted with hiring new recruits and training for the Gainesville Fire Department.
Canada is a Gainesville native. He and his wife Jenny have two children, Kayla, age 9 and Carson, age 5.
