The bells are ringing; time to eat for free
By Judd Hickinbotham
The weather is starting to get warmer. The birds are starting to sing. And lovers are starting to "walk the plank." Yep, that's right, it's wedding season.
And this will be the biggest wedding season of my life. See, I'm at that age where all of my friends are either a) getting married, b) getting divorced, or c) having kids.
If a friend gets divorced, you just sit there and listen to him or her complain about the other ex-spouse. If a friend has a kid, you visit them in the hospital, and realize those late nights of hanging out and talking about who is hotter, Betty Rubble or Wilma Flintstone, are over.
But when a friend gets married, it's time to do nothing else but party.
I have seven different weddings to attend this year. SEVEN! And I'm pumped.
Some people don't like weddings, for whatever reason. I must admit, I don't enjoy the following things: wearing a tie, dancing, participating in small talk, or hearing other people ask, "So when are you all getting married?" You see all of those things at wedding receptions.
Having said all that, though, I must say I love weddings. I love how everyone is happy. And I LOVE anything that's free--and of course, that includes free food and drink.
I'm going to be a groomsman for one of my best friends in July, and my cousin is getting married in May. Both of those will be in Florida--not too shabby.
As for the other five weddings, they're even better. I don't even know the people. City Girl has five different weddings that she's dragging me to. That means five chances to eat and drink for free and really not have to make an impression.
It's great to reminisce with family and friends, but in a way it's even better to anonymously go to a wedding and have fun.
In my single days, weddings were a great way to meet girls, too. If they were single, they were usually willing to mingle with most anyone at the reception. The movie "Wedding Crashers" is pretty accurate, although those guys put me to shame.
But now that I'm older and in a relationship, weddings take on a different role. My girlfriend is happy because she has a date and I have to dress up. I'm happy because I get food and get to do some partying.
It's a win-win for everyone. Except for maybe the bride and groom, depending on the couple. But that ain't me, so. . .
Let the season begin!
